For Julie – Sonnet I

Each night I watch Orion in the sky,

These cold dry nights when stars shine out and gleam.

He’s hunting, seeking,  all alone on high;

In him I see relected all my dreams.

 

Stars in the night sky guide us blindly through the night,

And point the way to home and to our rest.

South London De Gama, I watch the light,

The light that shines and leads me on my quest.

 

To find you I’d no compass but my heart,

Beating and yearning, restless, lonely, lost -

Blundering over oceans with no chart,

Watching constellations through the frost:

 

Now I am lost far off, please call me back

And give me, Julie dear, all that I lack.
